A pet peeve.

Want to know something that drives me nuts?! People who speak in past tense about future happenings – i.e.:

“This patient is welcome to review with me in the future if she wishED to do so”,

or “DID you want me to get that to you next week?”,

“I could arrange for that if that happened” AAAUUUUURRRRGHHH……..

Typical Work Conversation

Me: “Mr Surgeon’s consulting rooms, this is Erin.”

Patient: “Hi, when’s your next available appointment?”

Me: “The next available is Monday 13th May at 2pm”

Patient: “And that’s the next available? Nothing earlier?”

Me: “….The next available appointment we have is Monday at 2pm”

Patient: “Hmm, OK, I was hoping for something earlier. That’s definitely the next available?”

Me: “THE NEXT APPOINTMENT WE HAVE IS MONDAY AT 2PM OR I COULD PUT YOU IN ON THURSDAY 6TH JUNE”

Patient: “Monday’s just so far away, but I suppose if that’s your next available… You don’t have anything this week?”

Me: “…So the 6th of June would be better for you then?”

Patient: “Oh, well, if Monday’s all you have then I’ll have to check my diary and get back to you”

Seriously?! SERIOUSLY!?

4. What message would you give to the world if everyone was listening?

Be kind to, respect, and be patient with each other.  Or as my mother would say when I was 5 years old and fed up with my tiny, annoying brother – treat other people the way you want to be treated.

Stop assuming that everyone is out to maliciously and deliberately ruin your day – everyone is just trying to do the best they can.  Sometimes, their fuck-ups run in to your day, and sometimes your fuck-ups run in to someone else’s day.  Someone cut you off on the road, or chose to pay their shopping total with 10c coins, or called with a query that seems really pointless and ignorant to you?  Just breathe.  In one week, will you still be fuming over it? In one month, are you really going to care?

I’m going to paste something here from my favourite subscription, zen habits, who in turn paraphrased from Charlotte Joko Beck, author of Everyday Zen –

“Imagine you’re rowing a boat on a foggy lake, and out of the fog comes another boat that crashes into you! At first you’re angry at the fool who crashed into you — what was he thinking! You just painted the boat. But then you notice the boat is empty, and the anger leaves … you’ll have to repaint the boat, that’s all, and you just row around the empty boat. But if there were a person steering the boat, we’d be angry!

Here’s the thing: the boat is always empty. Whenever we interact with other people who might “do something to us” (be rude, ignore us, be too demanding, break our favorite coffee cup, etc.), we’re bumping into an empty boat. We just think there’s some fool in that boat who should have known better, but really it’s just a boat bumping into us, no harm intended by the boat.”

No one is perfect.  Be patient, and be kind. The world would be a nicer place if more people treated others with the kindness, respect and patience they desire.

The Return of the Craft!

Whoa! It’s like my sewing mojo went out for bread and milk, and disappeared, only to rock up 2 years later with a baby, three strung-out mates and a ragged looking dog. Where have you guys been all my life! THERE IS NOT ENOUGH TIME TO SEW ALL THE THINGS!

3. Who is your favorite person?

There are a number of favourites, does that count?

My favourite author is Neil Gaiman, who reminds me to look for the oddities and fantasticals in every day. My favourite writer/comedian is a very difficult equal first between Craig Ferguson, and Tina Fey, both of whom are honest, hilarious and well-groomed.  Craig wears a three-piece suit sometimes and has a creepy, sexy smile, and Tina makes me laugh and laugh and laugh about silly, everyday things. My favourite musician is John Butler, transcendent with a guitar, and passionate about community, family and conservation. My favourite roller derby player is Bonnie D.Stroir because, hello, have you seen this woman skate?!!  There are others in many different fields that I admire, but none that are my favourite.

I don’t pick favourites from my actual life – that’s unfair, and so very ever-changing.  It might be you today!

However, of course, it goes without saying, though I shall say it regardless – my all time, favourite, most treasured person on the planet is Ace.  Yes, yes, gag all you want.  It’s true.  He’s the face I want to see at the end of the day, whether it’s been a great day or a terrible day.  He’s the one I want to tell all the things to, share all the things with.
